Several Injured as Rough Air Hits Delta Plane Landing at Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines aircraft traveling from LA to Sydney was hit by rough air this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, a company official told. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Local paramedics reported they treated five individuals, and took a trio to a medical facility with relatively minor issues that such as pain in the back and headaches. Those affected ranged from their 30s to 70s.

It is the newest example of aircraft encountering turbulence, with experts indicating that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the Airbus A350, the representative said, stating that the plane landed "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

Paramedics reported they got a call just three minutes ahead of the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, experienced "severe" turbulence just a couple of hours into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an emergency landing.

In 2024, passengers and crew on a certain international flight endured a terrifying brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger passed away and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers rose out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is fairly routine while flying, and while occurrences of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of in excess of 35 million aircraft departures that now take off worldwide.

Intense turbulence is defined as when the sudden jolts of a jet passing through unstable air exert greater than a significant G-force on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a safety belt.

As global warming modifies weather patterns, experts warn that commercial aviation could become more turbulent: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the upper atmosphere are projected to increase the frequency and intensity of severe turbulence.
