Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism left him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
